When you think back to your own childhood, it’s not the expensive stuff that makes you nostalgic but the times you made your own fun (making mudpies, building dens, and running wild on outdoor adventures), right?
SO, LET THE CHILDREN TAKE CONTROL ⚠️👧👦
(Within safe boundaries, of course)!
Here are some ideas for you that don’t cost a penny…
1. GO ON A MYSTERY BIKE RIDE 🚴
Enjoy a family bike ride with a difference – your children decide the route! Turn right? Or left? It’s up to them.
Where will you end up? It’s a mystery!
The sense of freedom this activity gives children is huge. It feels like a real adventure. (And a parent is around to make sure they stay safe and to help if everyone gets lost)!
2. DRESS FOR SUCCESS 👚
Are squabbles over what your children should wear an all-too-familiar part of mornings in your house?
Why not turn the tables by letting your children decide what everyone wears?
It sounds crazy (and it probably is!) but wearing clothes picked out by your 5-year-old is guaranteed to be memorable.
3. COOK UP A STORM 🍳
Why not put your little ones in charge of dinner?!
Set a budget and go shopping together for ingredients. Let them select any food combinations they like. Custard and bacon? Pasta and pineapple? It really is up to them!
Then, back at home, under adult supervision, the task is for them to create the family’s evening meal.
This activity may end up with a questionable dinner, but it’ll give the children a whole new appreciation of the work their parents do. (And you can always order a takeaway once they’ve gone to bed)!
4. GET GRANDPARENTS INVOLVED 👵 👴
Spending time with grandparents is always fun, so why not turn it into a game that puts children in charge?
Have a giant game of ‘Hide & Seek’. Tell the children that Granny or Grandad is hiding somewhere in your local shopping mall or park. It’s down to the children to lead your party and search out clues to where their relative is.
Pretty soon you’ll find that the grandparents are just as competitive as the children – working hard to avoid detection!
A MINDSET 💭
Once you’re in the mindset that spending large amounts of money isn’t essential for your children to have fun, ideas will come to you. All it takes is a little imagination and the good sense to step in if things become unsafe.
